Can’t find your usual Hormone Replacement Therapy? Talk to us

As reported in a recent article in Guardian Australia, stocks of certain kinds of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have become scarce in Australia with supplies not expected to return to normal until July, or in some cases, September.

The shortages apply to various doses of Estradot, Estalis Sequi and Climara patches as well as Angeliq and Duavive.

Some pharmacies are reporting they’ve completely run out of stock, while others say supplies are dwindling fast as women from outside their usual catchment area search further afield to get their scripts filled.

It’s not believed the shortages are linked to the Covid 19 pandemic, however the official explanation is vague with “manufacturing” the only reason given to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) by manufacturers.

While it’s been suggested that women switch to another, more readily available kind of HRT for the duration of the shortage, Dr Sonia Davison from the Australasian Menopause Society told The Guardian this solution was not as easy as it sounds.

“…some women will struggle on an alternative product … what may be an excellent option for one woman may be poorly tolerated by another”, Dr Davison told The Guardian.

If you’ve experienced difficulty sourcing your usual HRT medication, the sensible, no fuss alternative is to have your HRT medication professionally compounded by a fully Australian-owned and operated pharmacy like National Custom Compounding.

With a script from your doctor National Custom Compounding can make up your usual supplies of HRT using the same raw, active ingredients as those of the manufacturer. Like all compounding pharmacies in Australia, National Custom Compounding is bound by a strict set of operating procedures that ensure safety and efficacy of the products they produce.

Talk to your doctor and ask if a script for compounded HRT might be suitable for you.
